Right at the point where Highway 20 and Interstate 5 intersect, travelers on the Cascade Loop will come to the town of Burlington, Washington. This cute little town, being right off of I-5 has plenty of features that many associate with a large city. Get a few blocks away from the freeway though and you find out this is in fact a small town with a lot of charm. Burlington also sits alongside the Skagit River, not far from where it empties into Skagit Bay and Puget Sound. This is a fun little community to visit and even spend the night in before you enter the mountains or after crossing over them from the east side of the state.

Burlington offers plenty of chain department stores and even a big shopping mall just off of the freeway. ¬†If you’re going to Burlington, movies are a popular diversion there and the large cineplex at the mall is the place to see all the big name releases. ¬†Venture away from there though and you’re sure to find some very nice locally owned small shops and restaurant options. Other things to do and see in Burlington include a children’s museum, several parks, a fish market, flight museum, bike park, and a farm that’s open to the public. Being entertained while visiting Burlington is an extremely easy thing to accomplish.

Burlington – The Surrounding Area

The area that surrounds Burlington is also a great help at making sure you are entertained while you are there. A drive out into the surrounding countryside will treat you to both natural beauty and a look at some great farmland. Just to the west of Burlington is your entrance to Fidalgo and Whidbey islands. From Deception Pass State Park, to the historic bridge that shares its name, to all the great sights worth seeing along the shoreline, this is a truly fun area to explore. This is especially true further south when you reach the state parks and historic forts. South from Burlington takes you to the communities of Mount Vernon, Marysville, and Everett. From casinos to shopping opportunities and everything else, including a world class concert venue, you’ll find plenty to do in that direction. Traveling north will lead you to Bellingham and the Canadian border beyond. While going east from Burlington takes you to small towns like Concrete, Rockport, and Newhalem as you stretch up and over the Cascade Mountains. All around you will find great things to see and experience like wineries, working farms, state parks, golf courses, and more. If you appreciate outdoor recreation, being in Burlington means you are very near a nice selection of kayaking, hiking, and river rafting options. Burlington is an awesome place to spend some time in and one of those reasons is all of the great things there are to see and do that are within an easy drive from town.
