Located high in the North Cascade Mountains, the town of Diablo is a bit of a throwback to long ago times. Diablo is a tiny village now but at one time was a thriving company store started by Seattle City Light during the building of the Diablo Dam, part of the Skagit Hydroelectric Project. Most of what you’ll find there now in this little community on the Skagit River are historic buildings, some still in use, homes where employees of the national park and other local entities live, remnants of time gone by, and incredible scenery. When you’re driving over the North Cascades Highway, taking the time to drive up and see Diablo can be very worthwhile.
Things To Do In Diablo
Diablo is a nice place to visit and will give you the perfect sense of a quiet and remote mountain community. The biggest draw in the town is the historic Diablo Dam located just upstream and a great photo taking opportunity. You can even drive right across the top of the dam. Diablo is also where to go to access Ross Lake Resort which is a one of a kind lodging opportunity. If you have the time, make reservations for the Diablo Lake Boat Tour. This unique tour takes you out on the water of this high mountain reservoir where you’ll learn about the local history as well get a great opportunity for sightseeing and photography.
Diablo – The Surrounding Area
Diablo is surrounded by some incredible scenery. When you visit there you’re right in the heart of the North Cascades so you can get out on the water of the Skagit River, Diablo Lake, Ross Lake, and Gorge Lake. Traveling east from Diablo takes you up and over the top of the Cascade Mountain and head you down the east side towards Mazama, Winthrop, and Twisp. Heading west will take you to Newhalem, Marblemount, Rockport, Concrete, and the Skagit Valley. There are a lot of hiking options in the Diablo area, many giving you the chance to see some wonderful examples of local wildlife including bears, cougars, deer, squirrels, eagles, and more.
