About Index

The community of Index sits just off Highway 2 in the thick forested area of the western foothills of the Cascade Mountains. With a population of just a couple of hundred, Index is a sleepy little place secluded from the highway traffic by a short drive north and a bridge over the North Fork Skykomish River. It got its start with ties to the local lumber and mining industry, being founded in 1907. Today, it has emerged as a growing attraction for vacationers with several rental cabins becoming available in recent years.

Things To Do In Index

Outdoor Adventures is located in Index and they are very popular with their adventure tours and river rafting trips. There are also many hiking opportunities in the area and fun places to get down to the river. A visit to Index also allows you some prime chances to kick back and relax, satisfied that you really have gotten away from it all.

Index – The Surrounding Area

Index is surrounded by some fun opportunities to get out in the great outdoors. Bridal Veil Falls Trailhead is located just across the highway from the turnoff to the town. Wallace Falls State Park is located just a few miles to the west. Further west are the towns of Gold Bar, Startup, Monroe, and the Skagit Valley. This area is home to all kinds of shopping experiences, restaurants, antique stores, and things to do including an actual reptile zoo. Heading the other way on Highway 2 is Skykomish and Stevens Pass, home to the Stevens Pass Ski Area. Index is a great place to stop off at, overnight or otherwise, when driving the Cascade Loop.
