Newhalem is a very small community located right on the Cascade Loop with the water of the Skagit River rushing by. This is a company town owned by Seattle City Light. The entire population of the town are employees of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project or local government agencies. The entire town is surrounded by the Ross Lake National Recreation Area. Summers in Newhalem are very pleasant, with lots of warmth and little rainfall. The rest of the year, this little community gets quite a bit of precipitation. The town is home to a Skagit Information Center and a general store.
Things To Do In Newhalem
With no lodging options, Newhalem is primarily a drive-by attraction. Checking out a company town, something that was quite common in the early 1900’s and before, can be an interesting thing to see for some. The general store there is the last place to get supplies for anyone traveling east up and over Rainy and Washington passes to the eastern side of the Cascade Loop and the communities of Mazama, Winthrop, and Twisp. There is a very scenic footbridge across the Skagit River in Newhalem, as well as this historic Gorge Powerhouse. Both are very popular with amateur photographers passing through.
Newhalem – The Surrounding Area
Like many of the other very small communities high in the North Cascades, Newhalem is also surrounded by some incredible scenic locations and some great opportunities for outdoor recreation. Located just outside of town is the North Cascades National Park Visitor Center which can give you a wealth of information on the entire region. There are also several campgrounds available east and west of town. The town of Diablo to the east is home to a unique opportunity to drive across the top of the Diablo Dam. Hiking opportunities like Hidden Lake Peaks Trail, among others, are also popular with travelers. One of the best things to do in the area is to take the Diablo Lake Boat Tour, when available, that takes you out on the beautiful, milky green water of Diablo Lake where you’ll learn about the local and natural history of the area and more. Newhalem really is surrounded by plenty to do no matter what you’re interested in.
